Ultrasound of carotid arteries
Ultrasound is used to detect atherosclerotic plaques, narrowing and blockages in the carotid arteries.
Schedule appointmentUltrasound is used to detect atherosclerotic plaques, narrowing and blockages in the carotid arteries.
Schedule appointmentThe examination is performed with the patient lying on the back with the head lowered in order to access the carotid arteries. If you are unable to lie horizontally with your head down, we will not be able to carry out the examination.
Your doctor will refer you for an examination if you are being treated for high blood pressure, have diabetes, high levels of fat in the blood (cholesterol, triglycerides), smoke or have had a stroke in the past. The examination also checks the success of interventions on the neck arteries (surgeries, so-called widening of veins, insertion of stents).
As you have to lie with your head down during the examination, you may feel a little dizzy when you get up, so we will warn you to sit up slowly at first until the dizziness and light-headedness have passed. They usually last a few seconds and are the result of a change in body position.
Ultrasound of the carotid arteries takes 5–10 min, depending on the extent of the disease.
No special preparation is needed. You must remove your necklace and high-collared clothing before the examination.
