WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THE PROCEDURE?

Surgical treatment of venous insufficiency is carried out from September to May; it is not carried out in the summer months due to warmer temperatures outside. Surgeries are performed as an outpatient under local anaesthesia; you can leave after the procedure, but you are not allowed to drive a car. If you have a journey of more than an hour, you are advised to take a 5-minute walk every hour.

Bring compression stockings to the procedure and you will need to use them for six weeks after the procedure.

Laser vein surgery (EVLT, EVLA)

It is performed when the two largest saphenous veins are damaged, i.e. the great saphenous vein (saphena magna) and the small saphenous vein (saphena parva). This method is not suitable for all other veins as the laser can only be used on veins that are not tortuous. Duration of procedure: 30–60 min

Sclerosation

It is only suitable for small varicose veins (1–3mm in diameter). The surgeon injects a sclerosant into the vein, which causes it to block. After the procedure, your leg is bandaged with an elastic bandage, which must be used for two to four weeks. Duration of procedure: 1–10 min (depending on the scope)

Perforator ligation

The surgeon makes a small incision (about 1 cm) in the skin, locates the diseased perforating vein and closes it with surgical thread. Duration of procedure: 0.5–2 hours (depending on the scope)

Phlebectomy of varicose veins

It is the surgical removal of tortuous, varicose veins. Duration of procedure: 0.5–2 hours (depending on the scope)
